CHAMPION FLEECE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The winners of New Zealand's best fleece competition - the 2005 Royal Agricultural Society National Golden Fleece Championships - were announced yesterday at the Royal Agricultural Society's Conference in Christchurch.
Coldstream Estate (A.W.A & A.C Studholme) from Ashburton took top honours in the fine wool section and strong wools champion went to Rawahi Romneys (R & N Warren) from Featherston.
Coldstream Estate's winning fine wool fleece was entered in Class 17 - Corriedale Ram. The fleece measured 34.5 micron, with a greasy weight of 8.5 Kgs. The overall fleece yield was 76.32 percent giving a clean weight of 6.49 Kgs. Total points allocated to the fleece were 99.
The Rawahi Romney's winning strong wool fleece was entered in Class 26 - Romney Shorn Hogget - and scored a total of 97.5 points. The fleece measured 38.4 micron, with a greasy weight of 5.0 Kgs. Overall fleece yield was 82.06 percent giving a clean weight of 4.1 Kgs.
Mr. Peter McCusker from Pyne Gould Guinness judged the competition this year and was impressed with the quality of fleeces available.
"While the convenors of the competition tell me the number of fleeces is down from previous years, it certainly hasn't affected the quality and this is reflected in the high point scoring across many of the sections. In fact there is less than two points difference between the winning fine and strong wool fleeces."
This year the Golden Fleece Competition was hosted by the Central District of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand and National Convenor, Mr. Richard Lemon, confirmed the quality of the competition was high. The total number of fleeces entered was 77 and while Mr. Lemon conceded entries were down from the last competition, "That was more than made up for by the score of the winning fine wool fleece," he said. Judging of this fleece was done fairly early in the competition and we knew a score of 99 would be hard to beat," Mr. Lemon added.
The Golden Fleece competition began in 1969 and encourages and recognises excellence in agriculture.
As such it is a promotion of the very best fleeces produced in New Zealand and sets the benchmark for wool producers throughout the country. The competition is generously supported by Ravensdown Fertiliser, Pyne Gould Guinness, SGS Wool Testing Services and Wrightson Ltd. Both the fine wool and strong wool winners will receive the Royal Agricultural Society's prestigious Gold Medal and $500.
The winning fleeces and the Golden Fleece Exhibition are on display at the Riding for Disabled Pavilion, Canterbury Agricultural Park on 30 June and 1 July.
